The Gathering Storm

I have been reading Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series since primary school, and it was thus with great sadness that I heard of his passing in 2007. It was thus also with some trepidation that I began reading The Gathering Storm, book 12 in the series and (hopefully) the third last volume. Based in part on Jordan’s notes and uncompleted writings, and for the rest written by Brandon Sanderson, I was unsure whether it would still feel like the rest of the series I’ve come to love.

I was thoroughly impressed, however. Sanderson maintains Jordan’s incredible detail and realism, and within pages I found myself drawn right back into the incredibly complex world with its multitude of characters. The plot is clearly coming to a head, and the book is fast-paced.

In short this is an excellent read, and I cannot wait for the two final installments. When the last book comes out I shall have to read all fifteen novels again, although at an average of seven or eight hundred pages each it might be a fairly long-term project.
