The Coral Thief

Entranced by it’s beautiful cover and intriguing blurb, I bought The Coral Thief by Rebecca Stott on a whim at a second-hand store a few months ago.

An extremely well-researched historical novel, it takes place in Paris shortly after Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo. The plot follows a young British student who has come to study in Paris’ lively academic environment. As he is en route to the city, he meets a beautiful and intelligent woman who steals some priceless corals he is to give to a Parisian professor.

Part philosophical and historical study of a tumultuous time in academic thought, and part heist, this is an engaging, intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable read.
