My Bookshelf

As anyone who visits my blog must know, I have a great love of books. Having moved into a house with friends this year, I finally found myself with a room large enough for a proper bookshelf, so I spent a few days building one. I also decided to arrange my books by colour, and have found great enjoyment therein (also because it means constantly rearranging them as I get new books or lend books to people).

So, here then is a photo of my bookshelf (click on it for a higher resolution). I apologise for the poor quality of the photo – the room doesn’t provide enough distance to take a decent photo, and I don’t have the necessary equipment to set up proper lighting.

I’m delurking for this. I also love books and at the same time find deep satisfaction in arranging things according to colour – it’s like opening a brand new tin of faber castell pencils. But I have this other compulsion: my books have to be in alphabetical order. I have moved some of my blue books to another room to add a blue accent…but I’ll probably move them back soon. It bothers me too much if they’re not in their right alphabetical place.

But yours look great and I wish mine could look like that.

I did wonder whether I would cope with this – before all my books were strictly arranged by subject and author (a type of small-scale Dewey system) – and there’s definitely a neat and organised part of me that hates the randomness of it. In spite of that, I’ve found it very satisfying, both aesthetically and because it forces me to keep browsing my own bookshelf to reshuffle books and, on occasion, to find them.
