A Journey Begun

You could see the whole world, that day. The sky was a clear, brilliant blue that seemed to be limitless, an unplumbed depth far above. It was the kind of day on which you can feel all your concerns dissipating, drawn into that endless open space above; becoming thinner, more stretched out, less pressing.

Unable to resist the allure of the crisp, bright wintry sun, by mid-morning I had wandered far into the mountains above my house. I walked without any goal and without any hint of urgency; quite lost in the exceptional calm.

It was some time before I began to suspect that there was something wrong. Looking back, I am hard-pressed to say exactly what it was that first alerted me. Perhaps a sudden stillness where there had been birdcalls, perhaps a quick breeze bringing an unexpected chill. What I do remember, however, is that by the time I was fully conscious that I had stumbled into somewhere else,  I was far from home.

It is hard to explain, now, what it was like to suddenly find yourself in a landscape become oddly alien; still the familiar hills and mountains I loved, and yet conspicuously different.

Fighting a rising sense of disquiet, I attempted to get my bearings. While this had never happened to me before, I was well versed in what could happen to those who went where they didn’t belong. I had maybe half an hour to return home; any longer than that and something was sure to become aware of my presence…

I have decided to try and pen at least one item of creative writing per week. This is the first, and I welcome any thoughts or comments thereon. It will probably be continued in upcoming posts.
